Kitchen box grater - your essential tool for food preparation

Handheld kitchen box graters

A box grater is a kitchen tool with sharp holes, commonly used for grating vegetables, cheese, lemon or orange zest, spices (ginger, garlic or nutmeg), and can also be used to grate other soft foods (e.g. butter). It is a basic kitchen utensils, similar to spiralisers or mandolines.

How do I ensure safety when using a box grater?

Although grating is much safer than cutting with a knife, some caution should be exercised when using it. You can use finger guards, and our box graters feature rubber stoppers on the bottom or edges to prevent unwanted slipping.

What types of box graters can I choose from?

There are various types of kitchen box graters, and the selection depends on the result you want to achieve and the foods you want to grate.

  • Multi-sided box graters: This type of box grater usually has four sides with different types of grating surfaces (coarse, fine, rasp, slicer). The handle at the top provides a firm grip, and the different grating surfaces make this type of box grater a versatile kitchen tool.
  • Flat box grater: This type of box grater (also called a grater) is very easy to use because it is flat, sits well on any bowl, and is easiest to store. It has a single gridded surface with a relatively large gridded area.
  • Zester: This is a narrow box grater for lemons and other citrus fruits, used for grating the zest from lemons and other citrus fruits, but it is also very useful for grating garlic, ginger, nutmeg or hard cheese such as Parmesan.
  • Rotary box grater: A rotary box grater with interchangeable drums for fine or coarse grating is the ideal tool for grating larger quantities of cheese, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, courgettes or chocolate. The food is placed in the drum and grated by turning the handle.
