Shu Fa's textured collection is inspired by traditional ink paintings of the Chinese mountainous landscape which are both delicate and expressive. The very term "shu fa" in Chinese refers to calligraphy, the ancient art of penmanship and hand-painted characters.

The Shu Fa series by young Chinese designers Mao Churong and Gong Yining is the result of the Nachtmann NEXTGEN design competition, which collaborated with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing for the 2016 edition.

Nachtmann NEXTGEN: Competition and Collaboration

Since 2008, prestigious design schools have been able to nominate their talented students for the Nachtmann NextGen competition, which seeks young, promising designers worldwide. Independent product designer Stefanie Kubanek, in collaboration with the Nachtmann team, creates new assignments for each project. After introducing students to the practical side of glass production directly in the glassworks in Germany, an intensive phase of work on the design itself follows.

The winning design materializes from an idea into a final product: a design series produced under the Nachtmann brand.
